Still mourning the sudden death of founder member and drummer The Rev, Avenged Sevenfold have regrouped and hit back with the all the delicacy of a pneumatic drill. Their trademark afterlife-inspired lyricism takes on a new and uneasy poignancy as wailer M. Shadows swaggers inimitably between subtlety and extremity.
Catchy-as-hell opener Nightmare is a clear contender for metal single of the year while God Hates Us bruises with a primal rage all of its own. And lead guitarist Synyster Gates, as ever, goes large on the old-school solos and monster riffage.
This is another epicly triumphant blast of metal and fitting tribute to The Rev.
