Synyster Gates Talks Avenged Sevenfold & "Hail To The King" With The Montreal Gazette.

The Montreal Gazette has run an article ahead of Avenged Sevenfold’s appearance at Heavy MTL with insight from Synyster Gates about the lead guitarist joining Avenged Sevenfold, the bands evolution and the new album “Hail To The King.”

And it’s all come together with Hail to the King, their latest record, out Aug. 27. Judging from the titular single, the music is expansive, layered. If the word “epic” hadn’t been ruined by Skyrim reviews and Dragonforce guitar solos, it might apply here. And that’s entirely deliberate, according to Gates. “We made a conscious effort to (give) the arrangements more space … to allow space for bigger riffs and bigger drums,” he says.

Those riffs, he says, are the best way to define the new album. Not only do they represent a new approach, but they’ve allowed the band to experiment with different sounds. “We haven’t really done riffs quite yet. It was always about duelling guitars,” Gates explains, “(we listened) to a lot of classical music. Horns, brasslines, they can get you thinking differently and outside of the box about riffs.”
