It’s usually not a good harbinger for your tour if during the opening seconds of opening night someone hangs himself onstage. Yet that display, accompanied by some spooky keyboards, welcomed Avenged Sevenfold to the stage Thursday night. The California-based quintet and three other heavy rock bands kicked off the “Nightmare After Christmas” tour in front of an ecstatic, swarming Sovereign Center.

It was quite the spectacle: A double-guitar, double-bass-drum attack drove the music, banks of lights and plumes of fire going off in time to the locomotive rhythms.

But Avenged Sevenfold wasn’t all testosterone. While many of its brethren simply scream their way through songs rather than spending valuable time writing melodies, the band utilizes melody and harmonies without sacrificing any heaviness. Whoever was in charge of the mix did a great job allowing the more intricate aspects of the band’s music to be heard over the din.

The tour wasn’t the only new beginning for Sevenfold; new tour drummer Arin Ilejay made his debut behind the kit.
