2005 – Avenged Sevenfold “City of Evil”
If 2003’s “Waking the Fallen” was the sound of a young band excitedly machine-gunning their many influences (Iron Maiden, Misfits, Metallica) into their sound, Avenged Sevenfold’s third full-length, City of Evil, ditched the metalcore of yore to present a more refined contender for a seat at metal’s top table. Given that they’ve been dining at it ever since, you could certainly suggest it’s a gamble that worked.
